Direct vasodilators Flashcards
List the direct vasodilators
Monday Night Football in HD: Minoxidil, Nitroprusside, Fenoldopam, Hydralazine, Diazoxide
Minoxidil’s mech of action and effect
Opens K+ channels which relaxes vascular smooth muscle
Does Minoxidil vasodilate arterioles, veins, or both?
Arterioles ONLY!!!
Important side effects of Minoxidil?
reflex tachycardia, and POWERFUL renin release!! Like holy shit, thats a lot of renin!!
Nitroprusside is a prodrug that is metabolized into?
NO- nitrous oxide
Does nitroprusside vasodilate arterioles, veins, or both?
BOTH!
Mech of action of nitroprusside
increases intracellular cGMP
side effects of nitroprusside?
- Reflex tachycardia
- Hypotension
- NO is metabolized to cyanide which is toxic
Clinical use for nitroprusside?
HTN emergency!!
Fenoldopam’s mech of action?
Dopamine receptor agonist
Fenoldopam half life?
10 minutes
Clinical uses of fenoldopam?
IV drip for HTN emergency!!
Side effects of fenoldopam?
reflex tachycardia, increased intraocular pressure (contraindicated in glaucoma)
Hydralazine side effects
- Palpitations
- Reflex tachycardia
- Autoimmune reactions
Which direct vasodilator would you use for HTN emergency from pregnancy (eclampsia)
Hydralazine
