- E-commerce: easily captured, through what is purchased/viewed & their account details

- They are frequently used to create and populate customer databases
- Targeting is important

Data mining is the extraction of previously unknown yet comprehensible and actionable information from large data pool. It is used to make business decisions & support the implementations

- Relatively cheap
- Can be done continuously
- Trends can be spotted
- Not very targeted
What are the benefits and disadvantages data mining?
- More targeted approach
- Expensive
- Specialist skills and technology needed
