See if physically attractive people are assumed to have more ‘socially desirable personality traits’ and ‘lead better lives’ than unattractive people.
Sample
American university students
- 30 male, 30 female
Procedure
Told it was study of ‘accuracy of people perception’
3 envelopes with photos of people their age
- very, moderately, or un attractive
- half - shown same gender, half - shown opposite
- photos, gender, and order received all random
- rate each photo on 27 personality traits, 6 point scale
- survey on person’s marital, parental, and overall happiness
Results and conclusion
Attractive predicted to be
- significantly happier
- more successful
- more positive traits.
- not predicted to be better parents
Supports ‘halo effect’ - more attractive perceived as having more positive qualities.
