Dinnington, South Yorkshire, UK Flashcards
Where is dinnington?
South Yorkshire
Where is South Yorkshire?
Don’t let the name fool you. It means South OF Yorkshire. It’s up in the north.
What was dinnington? What was it heavily received around?
It’s a town. It was very involved with the coal industry and many of the men and boys there worked in this primary sector job.
What happened to coal mined by dinnington?
It was sent of to a secondary sector manufacturer in Sheffield to help with their steel work
What type of job was coal mining?
Full time, high skilled, high payed job, male oriented. It was also primary sector.
Define de-industrialisation.
Decreases activity in manufacturing resulting in closure of industries, which leads to unemployment eventually
What happens to the coal industry when deindustrialisation hit dinnington
Many jobs in the coal industry were lost: and that was DETRIMENTAL because a lot of people in dinnington worked in coal mining
Deindustrialisation only affects dinnington coal industry. So why did the whole town suffer?
Dinnington’s whole source of income and their whole ECONOMY was based on coal mining. It’s because it’s well payed (to go into mines and do heavy work, it has to have a compensation)
What happened to the people of dinnington after deindustrialisation?
Those who have skill in other areas may move to the city in search for a source of income. Some maybe stay in dinnington, but commute to work in nearby cities.
How did jobs shift in dinnington after deindustrialisation (in terms of job sectors)
It shifted from primary to mainly tertiary/service types
What changed in terms of travel after deindustrialisation
It increased as people couldn’t work locally anymore. They had to now commute to work. They have to travel to nearby cities. Or people would just move away from dinnington and live in the cities
After coal mining became a closed opportunity, what types of jobs were taken?
Part time, temporary (signed with contract), female orientated as men were used to heavy work. Oh and tertiary sector
Why would attracting service businesses and industries by hard after deindustrialisation had dinnington?
For service business to be successful, you have to have people who have free money to spend on services that may not necessarily be a necessity. In dinnington, population decreased, overall income decreased. So less money to spend, less people to spend it. Service isn’t successful.
Deindustrialisation of dinnington didn’t only affect them. Explain and develop
It affected everyone that relied on their coal for supply. For example coal from dinnington was sent off to steal manufacturing in cities like Sheffield. And their steel is used for engineering and ship making. So when there’s no coal, there can’t be any of these other things
Why did the coal industry decline in dinnington (don’t accept deindustrialisation as an answer)
Coal became harder and deeper to mine, needed more expensive equipment to get to it. It became more expensive to carry out
