Q

What is the cellular pathology of of dilated cardiomyopathy ?

A

It is the dilation of the all four chambers of the heart due to the addition of sarcomeres in series which thins the chamber walls making the chambers large and the contractions weaker.

Q

What is the pathophysiological manifestations of dilated cardiomyopathy ?

A
  • Low SV
  • Biventricular congestive heart failure due to reduced pumping efficiency.
  • tricuspid and mitral regurgitation due to the stretching of the chambers induced valvular incompetency.

Q

What are the medicines used in dilated cardiomyopathy ?

A

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB) have shown benefit in the treatment of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction and are recommended in patients with DCM.

17
Q

What are the clinical signs of dilated cardiomyopathy ?

A

*Tachypnea, Tachycardia and Hypertension or hypotension.
* Signs of hypoxia (eg, cyanosis, clubbing).
* JVD, S3 gallops, and hepatic congestion.
* Signs of pulmonary and peripheral oedema.
