digestive system Flashcards
digestive system function
breaks down food masses into substances that can be absorbed by the circulatory system
carbohydrates
main source of energy
found in whole grains, root vegetables, plants
fats
found in nuts, seeds, oils
proteins
build and repair
found in meat, eggs, cheese
minerals
inorganic compounds the body needs in small amount
different minerals are found in different foods
milk (calcium), salt (sodium) banana (potassium)
vitamins
organic nutrients the body needs for certain reactions to take place
found in food, sunlight (D), bacteria in intestine (K,B)
water
solvent in body, maintains fluidity and cell structure, cools body, etc
need 2.4L per day
pathway of food
mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, anus
mechanical digestion
initial step of digestion by breaking it down into smaller pieces
occurs in mouth (teeth, tongue), esophagus (peristalsis), stomach (3 layer muscles) and intestines (peristalsis)
chemical digestion
digestion by chemicals breaking food down into molecular components that can be absorbed
occurs in mouth (salivary glands), stomach (HCL) and small intestine (digestive enzymes)
ingestion
taking food into the mouth, chewing and swallowing
digestion
process of breaking food down into smaller molecules
mechanical/chemical
regulated by enzymes
absorption
process of transferring nutrients from tract into the blood
elimination
process of removing unabsorbed food from the body
