digestive system Flashcards
mouth
lips help to select the food they eat, teeth are used to break down the food, chewing occurs in a circular pattern
chewing
breaks down particle size and causes salivation, saliva has sodium bicarbonate that acts as a buffer for digesta
margo plactus
divides the glandular (pH=2-3) and non-glandular regions of the stomach, main area for ulcers
stomach
2-3 gallons with limited ability to expand, continuously produces gastric juices and HCl
small intestine
composed of the duodenum, jejunum and ileum, liver and pancreas secretions enter into the duodenum, site of absorption for soluble carbohydrates, protein, fat and vitamins and minerals
liver
secretes bile continuously, the horse does not have a gallbladder
pancreas
secretes enzymes, insulin and buffers
cecum
4 ft ling and 7-8 gallons, start of microbial digestion, small amount of water absorption
large colon
microbes produce protein, fiber is turned into VFAs, acetate, propionate and butyrate
foregut
stomach and SI (35% of GI tract), enzymatic digestion
hindgut
cecum, large colon, small colon (65% of GI tract), fermentation, keeps microbes happy, what is not digested in the foregut goes to the hind gut
