Digestive System Flashcards
salivary gland
secrete salivary amylase/break down starch
lingual gland
secrete lingual lipase/break down triglycerides
stomach
secrete pepsin, hydrochloric acid, gastric lipase/break down protein and triglycerides, kill bacteria in food
small intestine
secrete various enzymes/additional processing of nutrients
pancreas
secrete pancreatic juice transported to duodenum through pancreatic duct
pancreatic amylase
responsible for majority of starch breakdown
pancreatic enzymes
break down proteins further
pancreatic lipase
responsible for almost all lipid digestion
pancreatic nuclease
responsible for digestion of nucleic acids
liver
produces bile that is stored and concentrated in the gallbladder until needed in the duodenum/bile emulsifies (breakdown) large fat globules into small fat globules
large intestine
bacteria in the lumen of the large intestine “normal flora” breakdown some of the remaining carbohydrates
duodenum
absorbs water, iron, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, other trace minerals
jejunum
majority of nutrient absorption, water
ileum
absorbs vitamin b12, A, D, E, K, bile salts, amino acids, fatty acids, cholesterol, sodium, potassium. other nutrients the jejunum didn’t and water.
