digestive system Flashcards
What is the role of enzymes in the digestive system
Enzymes act as biological catalysts which seed up the rate of biological reactions without being used up
What is the role of the pancreas and the salivary gland in the digestive system
They are glands which produce digestive juices containing enzymes
What is the role of the stomach
produces hydrochloric acid
which kills any bacteria present
what is the roel of the small intestine
site where soluble food molecules are absorbed into the bloodtstream
what is the role of the liver
produces bile
which emulsifies lipids
what is the role of the large intestine
absorbs water from undigested foods producing faeces
what is metabolism
the sum of all reactions in a cell/organism
what is the lock and key theory
the shape of the enzyme active site and the susbtrate are complementary so can bind together to form an enzyme substrate complex
How does temperature affect enzyme activity
increasing temp increasing enzyme activity because molecules have lots of kinetic energy
the optimal temp is 37 degrees, the enzymes then denature because the shape of the active site is altered
How does PH affect enzyme activity
increases
optimum PH is 7
decreases at 14
what are the three digestive enzymes
lipase
protease
amylase
what does lipase break down
fats
what does lipase break fats into?
fatty acids
glycerol
where is lipase made in
pancreas
small intestine
where does lipase work in
small intestine
