Blood Flashcards
What are the three types of blood vessels
arteries
veins
capillaries
What do arteries do
carry blood away from the heart
What adaptations do arteries have and how does it help
thick muscular layer - adds strength to resist high pressure
thick elastic layer - allows arteries to stretch and recoil to resist the high pressure
What do veins do
carry blood towards the heart
What adaptations do veins have and how does it help
wide lumen enables low pressure
valves - stops backflow of blood
what do capillaries do
enable the transfer of substances between the blood and tissues
what adaptations do capillaries have and how does it help?
walls are one cell thick so short diffusion path
permeable walls so substances can diffuse across
narrow lumen blood moves slowly so more time for diffusion
Equation for the rate of blood flow
volume of blood divided by number of minutes
