Digestive food enzymes - Organisation Flashcards
…. is a polymer of glucose, produced by plant
Starch
What ‘enzyme’ breaks down starch and what are the products?
Amylase breaks down starch into ‘maltose’ molecules
then further broken down by ‘maltase’ into ‘glucose’
What enzyme breaks down lipids and what are the products?
Lipases break down lipids into ‘glycerol and fatty acids’
What enzyme breaks down proteins and what are the products?
Proteases break down proteins into ‘amino acids’
What is a carbohydrase and give one example?
Carbohydrases break down carbohydrates to simple sugars.
Amylase is a carbohydrase which breaks down starch.
What is known as ‘digestive enzymes’?
Digestive enzymes convert food into small soluble molecules that can be
absorbed into the bloodstream.
What is ‘Bile’ and where is it located in the body?
Bile is a yellow-greenish liquid released from the gall bladder that helps with lipid digestion, however it is not an enzyme.
How does bile help with the digestion of lipids? (2marks)
It ‘emulsifies’ the lipids
which ‘increases the SA’ for the lipids to break down.
Where is ‘Amylase’ produced?
Salivary glands
Pancreas
Small intestine
Where is ‘Protease’ produced?
Stomach(called ‘pepsin’ here)
Pancreas
Small intestine
Where is ‘Lipase’ produced?
Pancreas
Small intestine
