Digestion and Absorption of Lipids Flashcards
Where are bile salts produced, stored and released?
They are produced by the liver, stored in the gall bladder which releases them into the small intestine
What do bile salts do?
They help to break down fat globules by emulsifying them into smaller droplets.
How does bile salts help to speed up the action of lipases?
They increase the surface area of lipids that can be exposed to the enzyme
What are Micelles?
Bile salts attached to the monoglycerides and fatty acids
What happens when the micelles hit the epithelial cells?
They break down which allows monoglycerides and fatty acids to diffuse across the membrane because the lipid-soluble
What happens when they are transport to the ER?
The monoglycerides and fatty acids recombine to form triglycerides
What happens to the chylomicrons when they reach the cell membrane of the epithelial cell?
They get exocytosed
What happens inside the Golgi?
They bind with cholesterol and proteins which forms chylomicrons
What are Lacteals?
Lymphatic capillaries
What happens to the chylomicrons when they go into the Lacteals?
They get transported away from the small intestine to different muscle tissues. They triglycerides can be hydrolysed and fatty acids are sued by the tissues.
