Digestion Flashcards
Physical Digestion:
Breaking larger chunks of food into smaller chunks w/o changing the structure.
Chemical Digestion:
Changing the molecular structure.
What does amylase break down?
Starch==> Simple Sugars
Where is amylase found?
The mouth
Function of oesophagus?
To perform peristalsis.
What is Peristalsis?
Muscular contraction by circular muscles.
What is HCl for?
Kills microorganisms
What does Protease break down?
Protein ==> A-A
Where is protease found?
Stomach
pH of protease?
3
Where is Lipase released?
LARGE intestine
Pancreas
What does Lipase break down?
Fats ==> Fatty acids + Glycerol.
Optimum pH for lipase?
7
What is the function of bile?
Neutralises stomach acid so lipase isn’t denatured.
Emulsifies large droplets of fat to inc SA.
Where is bile made?
Made in liver
