Digestion Flashcards
Carb digestion enzymes?
- salivary amylase (ptyalin)
- pancreatic amylase
- maltase
- sucrase
- lactase
Salivary amylase (ptyalin)?
- produced in salivary glands
- functions in mouth
- hydrolyzes starch to maltose
Pancreatic amylase?
- produced in pancreas
- functions in small intestine
- hydrolyzes starch to maltose
maltase?
- produced in intestinal glands
- functions in small intestine
- hydrolyzes maltose to 2 glucoses
sucrase?
- produced in intestinal glands
- functions in small intestine
- hydrolyzes sucrose to glucose and fructose
lactase?
- produced in intestinal glands
- functions in small intestine
- hydrolyzes lactose to glucose and galactose
Protein digestion enzymes?
-Pepsin
Function in small intestin:
- Trypsin
- Chymotrypsin
- Carboxypeptidases A and B
- Aminopeptidase
- Dipeptidase
- Enteropeptidase
Pepsin?
- produced in Gastric glands (chief cells)
- functions in stomach
- hydrolyzes specific peptide bonds
Protein digestive enzymes produced in pancreas?
- Trypsin
- Chymotrypsin
- Carboxypeptidase A and B
Protein digestive enzymes produced in intestinal glands?
- Aminopeptidase
- Dipeptidase
- Enteropeptidase
Trypsin?
hydrolyzes specific peptide bonds, converts chymotrypsinogen to chymotrypsin
Chymotrypsin?
hydrolyzes specific peptide bonds
Carboxypeptidases A and B?
hydrolyzes terminal peptide bond at C terminus
Aminopeptidase?
hydrolyzes terminal peptide bond at N terminus
Dipeptidases?
hydrolyzes pairs of amino acids
Enteropeptidase?
converts trypsinogen to trypsin
How are lipids digested?
- when chyme is present, the duodenum secretes the hormone cholecystokinin (CCK) into the blood
- CCK stimulates the secretion of pancreatic enzymes and bile, and promotes satiety
- bile is made in liver and emulsifies fat in small intestine, not an enzyme
What enzyme digests lipids?
lipase, made in pancreas and hydrolyzes lipids in small intestine
