digestion Flashcards
What is ingestion
the proccess by which food is taken to the gut
digestion
the process in which food is broken down
what is physical digestion
this is when the food is broken down into smaller peices by chewing or contraction of gut muscles
what is chemical digestion
this is when enzymes break down large, complex food molecules, into smaller, soluble molecules that can be absorbed
assimilation
the distribution and use of digested food in the body
egestion
the removal of undigested components of food via the anus
what is deamination
Deamination is the removal of an amine group from a molecule. In the human body, deamination takes place in the liver. It is the process by which amino acids are broken down. The amino group is removed from the amino acid and converted to ammonia.
what is peristalisis
it is the rythmic, wave like contractions of the gut that propels food along it
what happens when there is too much
what is mechanical digestion
the churning of the stomach muscles mixes enzymes with the food to form a liquid called chyme
chemical digestion
when the lining of the stomach produces gasric juice containg hydrochloric acid and pepsin
hydrochloric acid
produces acidic conditions (ph=2) for the action of enzyme pepsin and also destroys germs
pepsin
-the enzyme secreted in an active form called pepsinogen
-is activated by HCL
-converts proteins into polypeptides
wher is urea and bile produced
in the liver
whre is microvilli located
in the small intestines
