Digestion Flashcards
Digestive Tract
tube from mouth to organs
Accessory organs for digestive system
salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, secrete substances into digestive tract
Organs in digestive system
mouth, pharynx (throat), esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus.
amylase
breaks down sugars
acid and pepsin
break down protein
bile salts
solubilize fats
Digestive system functions
1) ingestion and mastication
2) propulsion and mixing
3) digestion
4) absorption
5) elimination
Ingestion and mastication
ingestion is the introduction of food into stomach. Mastication is the process of chewing to mechanically break down foods.
Propulsion and mixing
Propulsion is the movement of food in down the GI tract and mixing is movement of food back and forth.
Digestion
mechanical and chemical
Absoprtion
movement from tract into blood or lymph
Elimination
waste products removed from the body
peristalsis
moves material through digestive tract. A wave of circular smooth muscle relaxation moves ahead of the bolus of food or chyme allowing the digestive tract to expand. Then a wave of contraction of the circular smooth muscles behind the bolus of food or chyme propels it through the digestive tract
Food absoroption is done by the
small intestine
Mass movements are done by the
large intestie
