Digestion Flashcards
Proteins are essential to build…
Muscles
Eg of protease (2)
Pepsin, trypsin
Functions of fat and oils in our diet (3)
Using in production of cell membranes, storing energy and heat insulation.
Where is lipase produced?
In the pancreas
Where is bile made?
In the liver
1 product of fat digestion
Glycerol
Fatty acids & glycerol are absorbed into the…
Blood stream
What is a catalyst?
A substance that speeds up the rate of a reaction
Hello
What is Amylase?
An enzyme made in the mouth and pancreas
What does Amylase do?
It catalyses the breakdown of starch to smaller sugar molecules
What does the iodine test identify?
The presence of starch
Denatured definition
The breaking down of an enzyme so the substrate doesn’t fit anymore, the enzyme can no longer function as a catalyst
What causes denaturation? (2)
Changes in ph, and increase in temperature
What are amino acids?
The building blocks of protein
What does the digestion of starch make?
Glucose
What are lipids broken down into? (2)
Fatty acids and glycerol
Carbohydrase enzymes break down starch into?
Sugars
Protease enzymes break down proteins into?
Amino acids
What’s the name of the substance that is broken down by an enzyme
Substrate
Function of enzymes
To break down large food molecules (the molecules are too large to pass from the intestine into the blood)
Where is amylase produced? (3)
Salivary glands,pancreas and small intestine
Why don’t enzymes work well at low temperatures
They don’t have energy
Lipids are broken down into
Glycerol and fatty acids by lipase
Proteins are broken down into
Amino acids by protease
Starch is broken down into
Maltose and other simple sugars by carbohydrases(eg:amylase)
