Diffusion Flashcards
Definition of diffusion
The net movement for molecules or ions from an area of high concentration to low concentration until evenly distributed
What is facilitated diffusion and name 2 types
Other ways molecules can enter cells, still passive
Channel proteins and carrier proteins
How does a channel proteins work and what molecules does it allow through
Water filled channel that crosses whole membrane
Allows water soluble and small ions thru down the conc gradient
How does a carrier protein work
Exists for specific molecules, like glucose
The ion/molecule binds to the carrier protein and changes shape which allows the molecule to go through
4 factors that affect diffusion
Temp
Surface area
Conc gradient
Distance
How does temp affect diffusion
As temp increases rate of diffusion asleep increases as particles gain kinetic energy
How does surface area affect diffusion
As surface area increases rate of diffusion also increases as more molecules can diffuse at the same time
How does concentration gradient affect diffusion
As cons gradient increases rate of diffusion also increases due to the steeper conc gradient
How does distance affect diffusion
As distance increases rate of diffusion decreases because further distances require more time for molecules to diffuse across
