Cell Mediated Immune Response Flashcards
Where are lymphocytes made and where do the different types mature
Made in the bone marrow
B lymphocytes mature in the bone marrow
T lymphocytes mature in the thymus
What are antigen presenting cells
When phagocytes present the pathogens antigens on their own cell membrane
Why are there different types of t lymphocytes
Each T cell has a specific receptor on its cell membrane
What are the stages of the cell mediated response
- pathogens invade and it’s destroyed by phagocytosis
- phagocyte becomes apc
- receptors from t lymphocytes bind to specific antigen
- t helper cell is activated
- t helper cell divides rapidly forming clones
What are the 4 things the cloned t helper cells can do
- develop into memory cells enabling a rapid response next infection
- stimulate phagocytes to engulf more pathogens
- stimulate b lymphocytes to divide and secrete more antibodies
- activate cytotoxic t cells
What are cytotoxic T cells and what do they do
Cytotoxic T cells produce a protein called perforin which makes holes in the cell membrane of target cells, this causes the cell to become freely permeable to the substances and they ultimately die
