Diffusion Flashcards
What is diffusion?
The net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration down the concentration gradient.
Why does diffusion stop at equilibrium even tho particles are still moving?
There is no net movement.
What process is diffusion?
Passive.
What is metabolic energy?
The energy released by respiration.
What factor effect the rate of diffusion?
The concentration gradient, the particles charge and size, the temperature, the surface area of the membrane, the distance, and channels and carriers.
Why is the rate of diffusion greater in warmer conditions?
Particles have more kinetic energy.
What particles diffuse faster?
Small uncharged particles.
How does distance effect the rate of diffusion?
The greater the distance, the slower the rate.
Why are membranes so thin?
So particles have less distance to diffuse through.
What effect does the concentration gradient have on the rate of diffusion?
The greater the gradient, the faster the rate.
What effect does the surface area of the membrane have on the rate of diffusion?
The larger the surface area, the faster the rate.
