Cotransport Flashcards
What is the ileum?
The small intestine.
What lines the ileum?
Epithelial cells.
What do epithelial cells have on them?
Microvilli.
What do the microvilli on the epithelial cells do?
Provide more surface area for the insertion of carrier proteins through which diffusion, facilitated diffusion and active transport can take place.
What is another way transport across membranes can be increased?
By increasing the number of protein channels and carrier proteins in any given area of membrane.
Where is the highest concentration of glucose and amino acids?
The ileum.
Why is there a greater concentration of glucose and amino acids in the ileum then the blood?
As carbohydrates and proteins are being digested continuously.
How does glucose move inside the ileum into the bloodstream?
By facilitated diffusion.
