Osmosis And Water Potential Flashcards
What process is osmosis?
Passive.
What does passive process mean?
Doesn’t require any metabolic energy.
What is osmosis?
The movement of water molecules from a region of higher water potential to a region of lower water potential through a partially permeable membrane.
What do water molecules do to cells?
Collide with and apply pressure on the membrane.
What is the pressure applied on the membrane called?
Water potential.
What is the unit for water potential?
Kilopascals.
When is the water potential greater?
When there is a greater number of particles and greater pressure.
When does osmosis stop?
When the concentration is the same and equilibrium is reached.
What is still happening when osmosis stops?
Particles moving from each side yet there is no net movement.
What is the water potential for pure water?
0Kpa.
Why does pure water have the highest water potential?
Is has the highest possible concentration of water molecules.
What solution has a lower water potential?
A more concentrated solution.
What solution has the highest possible water potential?
Pure water.
