Diffusion Flashcards
What is diffusion?
The gradual movement of particles where there are LOTS of them to where there are FEWER of them - NATURAL TENDENCY for stuff to SPREAD OUT.
What is the DEFINITION of diffusion?
DIFFUSION is the SPREADING OUT of PARTICLES from an area of HIGHER CONCENTRATION to an area of LOWER CONCENTRATION
Why can diffusion happen in solutions and gases?
Because particles in these substances are free to MOVE ABOUT randomly
What will happen to the perfume particles in the air?
The perfume particles will diffuse in the air - this is the SIMPLEST TYPE of diffusion when GASES diffuse through each other.
What is the CONCENTRATION GRADIENT?
The DIFFERENCE in concentration between two substances
What does a bigger concentration gradient do to the diffusion rate?
Bigger concentration gradients means FASTER diffusion rate
