Diffusion Flashcards
1
Q
Diffusion
A
Is the random net movement of particles/molecules/ions from a place of high to low concentration, down a concentration gradient.
They move by their own kinetic energy and don’t require it.
2
Q
Factors affecting diffusion: Surface area
A
Large surface area proportion to volume increases rate of diffusion.
3
Q
Factors affecting diffusion: Temperature
A
Rate of diffusion increases with increase in temperature as the particles have more kinetic energy.
4
Q
Factors affecting diffusion: Concentration gradient
A
Diffusion occurs at a higher rate when the gradient is steeper.
5
Q
Factors affecting diffusion: Distance
A
As distance increases over which diffusion occurs, diffusion decreases.
