Q

In the early days, seeing the way my now long-term boyfriend was with my two cats absolutely cemented that I had picked a caring person. More than three years later, I will still regularly enter a room to find the pillows arranged on the bed to give one cat ‘a nice rest for his head’, or my boyfriend squeezed on to a tiny strip of the couch so the cats can stretch out.”

A

It occurs to me that perhaps I should have consulted an expert about the likelihood of irreparable psychological damage before I began launching myself at unsuspecting strangers. But I’m in too deep to back out now. I discover that nightclubs are fertile grounds for asking odd questions: people are either in exceptionally high spirits, or just exceptionally high. A suggested challenge is to ask a stranger if you can take their picture for no reason – and I do this with abandon. Most people agree, no questions asked, which is surely proof that Instagram has melted our brains. On one night out, I ask if I can pour my own pint and am told no by a barmaid who doesn’t even bother to make eye contact. By this point, being dismissed as an ignorable inconvenience feels like a win. The quicker the rejection arrives, the better.

A

It’s funny, it’s silly, and it’s weirdly engrossing even though all the separate elements are so recognisable. Some feel that Pokémon developer Game Freak has been too reticent to really shake up its ageing series over the last five years, and that Palworld is the modern incarnation longterm fans have been crying out for. It’s certainly gone down very well with lots of top video game influencers, becoming the No 1 game on streaming platform Twitch within a day of its release. This has certainly helped with attention.

For more than a decade, an anti-democratic reality has loomed over Wisconsin: elections for the state legislature don’t matter.

Since 2012, no matter how voters throughout one of America’s most competitive states cast their ballots, Republicans have been guaranteed to hold control of the state legislature. That’s because for more than a decade Republicans drew districts lines that are so distorted in their favor, they cemented their control. The dominance was underscored in 2022 when Tony Evers, a Democrat, won re-election with 51.2% of the vote. Republicans still held 65% of the seats in the 99-person state assembly.

A

Feel the pod has missed the crux of the issues with Monday’s episode. The age disparity was part of it, but it was on the whole the odd defence of Chelsea losing and talking about the league position etc. The pod is absolutely not biased to Chelsea, and to be honest feels a bit Liverpool leaning, but that episode had all the vibes of being recorded at Cobham.

A

Q

Blame it on the fact that CBD’s legal status is tough to parse. (Cannabidiol, which does not produce a high or compel you to much, is found in hemp, a cannabis plant with very low levels of THC; hemp-based CBD is legal at the federal level. CBD can also be derived from the marijuana plant, which contains higher levels of THC; this variation is not legal at the federal level.) That, plus the fact that more and more states have legalized actual weed, which could negate the desire for THC’s far less psychoactive cousin.

A

Q

Both Aristotle and Socrates ascribed akratic behaviors to a lapse in reason or knowledge. This is partly why, by the middle ages, akrasia got wrapped up with morality and religion. “There was the idea that akrasia was sinful,” said Annemarie Kalis, an associate professor in theoretical philosophy at Utrecht University. This is why we can feel so guilty when we make “unhealthy” choices – we think we should have known better and acted accordingly, or that we’ve succumbed to false ideas.

A

39
Q

Aristotle had a name for what happens when you change your mind about what’s good for you in the face of temptation or desire: weak akratic action. After you do whatever it is, you might change your mind again, and revert back to your original judgment. He distinguished this from an impetuous akratic act, or when you do something without thinking too deeply about it, then later decide that it violated your judgments – something he likened to “overhasty servants who run out before they have heard all their instructions and they carry them out wrongly”.

A

40
Q

The opposite of akrasia is enkrateia, or the virtue of having self-control. The person with self-control still wants a cigarette or to skip the gym, but their judgment is not as corruptible.

A

According to several international surveys and studies, one in 10 people claims to have had a near-death experience involving cardiac arrest, or a similar experience in circumstances where they may have come close to death. That’s roughly 800 million souls worldwide who may have dipped a toe in the afterlife.

A

Q

Initial class-action lawsuits brought against chemical makers have generated about $15bn for upgrades, but experts estimate the national cost closer to $400bn.

A

46
Q

Experts expect that such transfers will become more common as thirsty towns across the west seek increasingly scarce water. The climate crisis and chronic overuse have sapped the Colorado River watershed, leaving cities and farmers alike to contend with shortages. Amid a deepening drought and declines in the river’s reservoirs, Greenstone and firms like it have been discreetly acquiring thousands of acres of farmland.

A

47
Q

Making a movie about an iconic musician can be perilous – there are so many stakeholders with differing versions of events, and so many diehard fans looking for a perfect representation of their hero, that many music biopics end up being sanitised and glib. Look no further than Back to Black, Sam Taylor-Johnson’s Amy Winehouse biopic, for a perfect example of a film that attempts to satisfy every involved party and ended up offending a lot of fans and critics instead.

A
