What is DNAR?
A ‘Do Not Attempt Resuscitation’ order
What does a DNAR only apply to?
The terminal illness excluding other potential incidents that require resuscitation like choking
So can resuscitate in such circumstances
How is DNAR form different from an Advance Decision (Living Will)?
Advance Decision is a document that allows you to make a legally binding refusal of medical treatment in advance of a time when you can’t communicate your wishes or don’t have capacity to make a decision
Advance Decision can be used to refuse any treatment but DNAR form only applies to CPR
What does ADRT stand for?
Advance Decision to Refuse Treatment (aka Living Will)
What does an Advance Decision allow?
Refusal of specific type of treatment some time in the future. It lets family, carers and health care professionals know your wishes about refusing treatment if you’re unable to make or communicate those decisions yourself
When can an Advance Decision be made by the individual?
If they have mental capacity
What is a the Advance Decision legally bonded to?
The Mental Capacity Act
What is a Power of Attorney? (POA)
It is a written authorisation to represent or act on another’s behalf in private affairs, business or some other legal matter
It allows someone to make decision for you or act on your behalf if your are no longer able to or if you no longer want to make your own decisions
What are the three different types of Power of Attorney?
Ordinary POA
Lasting POA (LPA)
Enduring POA (EPA)
What is an ordinary POA? (Financial POA)
It covers decisions about financial affairs and if valid while you have mental capacity. It is suitable if your need over for temporary period or if you find it hard to get out, or if you want someone to act for you
What is LPA?
Covers decisions about financial affairs or health and care. It comes into effect of you lose mental capacity, or if you no longer want to make decisions for yourself.
