Different Types of Urinary Incontinence Flashcards
What is Stress Incontinence?
is loss of urine control during activities that increase intraabdominal pressure, such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercise.
What is Urge Incontinence?
involves a sudden strong urge to void, followed by rapid bladder contraction. The affected person does not have enough time for toileting between recognition of the urge to urinate and the onset of voiding.
What is Mixed Incontinence
is a combination of both stress and urge incontinence.
What is Functional Incontinence
refers to lack of urine control in the absence of any abnormalities of the urinary tract; it occurs when some physical limitation in functioning, such as difficulty with clothing fasteners or impaired mobility, hinders reaching the toilet before voiding occurs.
What is Overflow Incontinence
As seen in patients who are unable to empty the bladder completely, resulting in a constant dribbling of urine or increased frequency of urination.
What is Temporary Incontinence
can occur in association with factors such as severe constipation, infections in the urinary tract or vagina, or medication usage.
What is Nocturia
excessive urination at night , about more that 2-3 times of voiding at night, due to not voiding in the daytime.
What is Hematuria
A presence of blood in the urine
What is Dysuria
Painful sensation while urinating
What is Olyguria
An inadequate amount of the output of urine , less than 20ml/hr
What is the normal urine output per hour for a hydrated adult?
A. 25 ml/hr
B. 72 ml/hr
C.300 ml/hr
D.1000 ml/hr
B. 72 ml/hr
The correct answer is B,
The minimum amount of urine output is 30 ml/hr. If The adults’ urine output is more than 106 ml/hr the Patient has Polyuria, which is an abnormal urine output.
What is the Normal Range for Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN)?
A.12-20
B.95-100
C.60-100
D.10-20
The correct answer is D,
The normal range for Bun is 10-20. Answer choice A is the normal range for breathes per minute. Letter B, is the normal range for O2 Saturation. Letter C is the normal range beats per minute
What is the normal range of Creatine for Women and Men?
A. 1.009 - 2.980 (W) , 0.06-1.3 (M)
B. 0.5-1.1 (W) , 0.6-1.2 (M)
C. 2.4-3.5 (W) , 1.5-2.3 (M)
D. 123-456 (W) , 789-101(M)
The correct Answer is B. 0.5-1.1 (W) , 0.6-1.2 (M)
What do elevated BUN and Creatine levels indicate?
A. Kidneys are functioning Properly
B. Dehydration, Kidney functional filters, reabsorbs and secretes urine.
C. Kidney damage, kidney does not functionally filter, reabsorb, and secrete Urine
D.Hydration
C. Kidney damage, kidney does not functionally filter, reabsorb, and secrete Urine
Extra Info- Elevated Bun may also indicate
Elevated levels may indicate kidney injury or disease as well as conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, blockage of the urinary tract, a high-protein diet, severe burns, gastrointestinal bleeding, or problems such as dehydration or heart failure, which affect blood flow.
What is the normal range of Specific Gravity of the Urine?
A. 1050-1035
B. 1.005- 1.030
C. 25000-45000
D. 2.5-3.5
B. 1.005-1030
What does an Elevated Specific Gravity Indicate? What number is associated with an Elevated Specific Gravity?
A. Dehydration, concentrated urine, Dark Amber in color. Specific Gravity Number- 2.000
B. Hydrated, Pale clear urine. Specific Gravity Number-1.003
C. Blue color of the urine, Specific Gravity Number- 1.005
D. Green color of the urine, Specific Gravity Number- 1.030
Answer Choice A is the correct answer.
A. Dehydration, concentrated urine, Dark Amber in color. Specific Gravity Number- 2.000
What does a Decreased Specific Gravity Indicate? What number is associated with and Decreased Specific Gravity?
A. Pale, clear urine
B. Bright, red urine
C. Dark Amber color of urine
D. Blue color of the urine
A. Pale, clear urine
Where is Antidiuretic Hormone secreted from in the human body?
A.Hypothalamus
B.Pituitary Gland
C. Kidneys
D. Adrenal Gland
B. Pituitary Gland
What is the Function of Antidiuretic Hormone?
A. Retain sodium and fluid
B. Excrete transferrin
C. Expell sodium and fluid through urinary elimination
D.Causes edema
A. Retain sodium and fluid
What is the chemical name that ADH secretes?
A. Hematocrit
B. Aldosterone
C. Transferrin
D. Anemia
B. Aldosterone
What is Urinary Retention?
Urinary retention is the inability of the bladder to empty. It is caused by an obstruction in the urinary tract or by a neurologic disorder.
Which one of these Urinary Incontinences, is closely related to Urinary Retention?
A. Temporary
B. Overflow
C. Functional
D. Mixed
The correct answer choice is B. Overflow Incontinence.
Urinary retention is commonly related to Urinary retention because they frequently get a symptom of dribbling urine.
Signs and Symptoms from the book(Dribbling may occur between trips to the bathroom because the bladder is constantly full.)
A patient is scheduled for an intravenous pyelogram (IVP). Which piece of data would be most important to know before the procedure is carried out?
A. Urinalysis negative for sugar and acetone
B. History of allergies
C. History of a recent thyroid scan
D. Frequency of urination
The correct answer choice is B. History of allergies
Contraindications for intravenous pyelogram (IVP) include an allergy to iodine, which is like the contrast material injected during the IVP. Knowing this information would be critical to providing safe patient care. Frequency of urination may be an indication to perform an IVP;
- What self-care measure is most important for the nurse to include when developing a teaching plan for a patient who will be discharged with a urostomy?
a. Change the appliance before going to bed.
b. Cut the wafer 1 inch larger than the stoma.
c. Cleanse the peristomal skin with mild soap and water.
d. Use firm pressure to attach the wafer to the skin.
The correct answer choice is C. Cleanse the peristomal skin with mild soap and water.
The peristomal area should be washed by the patient using warm water and mild soap as needed and routinely at bath time. The collection device typically has a face plate to ensure a good fit and prevent leakage of urine. These appliances are changed less frequently than before bed each night, and neither a widely cut wafer nor firm pressure is needed for their application.
