Different Types of Networking Flashcards
What is Networking?
Networking refers to the link between computers to exchange data such as media, hardware and software.
What is Wi-Fi? Name some advantages and disadvantages.
Wi-Fi enables computers and other devices to communicate wirelessly with each other. Areas with the internet can be accessed wirelessly using Wi-Fi are called access points and they can be found in many public places, such as coffee, bars, hotels, airport, et cetera.
Advantages –
1. You are not confined to working in the same space and you can work anywhere as long as long as there is a signal
2. There is no need for any wires for connection as it is virus, making it easier to keep the working area clean and reducing cost.
Disadvantages -
1. The danger of hackers reading messages.
2. There are areas where you cannot get a wireless network.
What is bluetooth?
Bluetooth is a wireless technology used to exchange data over short distances and it makes use of radio waves. The range of Bluetooth depends on the power of the signal and can typically be from 5 m to 100 m.
How do we classify networks?
We classify networks on the basis of geographical distance.
What is LAN (land area network)?
- Can be wired (ethernet) or non wired (wifi)
- Within a small building or campus (simplest form is connecting two computers together)
- Small region of space
- Can also consist of less than 500 interconnected devices across several buildings
- Has a higher speed that both MAN and WAN
What is MAN (metropolitan area network)?
- Can be wired (city cable) or wireless (internet - like in ATMs)
- Always within a large physical area, e.g, a city.
- It is a high speed network, though, not as fast as LAN
- It is a collection of LANs within the same geographical area like city.
It is defined as a group of computer network devices connected together with a large physical area
What is WAN (wide area network)?
- Largest network of all network types
- Largest example of WAN is the internet.
- Covers large distances, such as states, countries, or continental.
- It is a group of MANs or LANs or the mixture of both networks.
- An example in the society using vWAN is the banking organisation
Define -
Web browser
Search Engine
Web browser - an application software to view webpages/sites. For example, chrome, Safari, and fireworks.
Search Engine - help locate webpages/websites when you do not know the exact URL. For example, Google or Yahoo.
What is the WWW
The WWW (worldwide web) is a depository of all webpages
The worldwide web is a collection of websites of webpages stored in web servers and connected to local computers through the internet.
These websites contain text, pages, images, audios, videos, etc.
Users can access the content of the sites from any part of the world over the internet, using the device, a computer or a laptop.
The WWW, along with the internet, enable display of text and media to your device.
Differentiate between Intranet and Internet.
An intranet is a private network that is contained within an enterprise.
An internet is a global network of computers that allows users to communicate with each other and access information from around the world.
Intranet is a secure private network while internet is an insecure public network.
