What is a CRT Monitor? Name it’s advantages and disadvantages.

A

A CRT (cathode ray tube) Monitor is an output device which are the fatter monitors being used today to display images.

Advantages - can be used with a light pen to edit/produce drawings with a software, can be used where multiple people need to view the screen at the same time

Disadvantages - quite bulky, heavier, flicker which can cause headaches

What is a TFT/LCD Monitor? Name it’s advantages and disadvantages.

A

A TFT (thin film transistor)/LCD is an output device which are thin/flat screens that are the more modern type of monitor. screen is made up of thousand pixels which have 3 transistors containing the primary colours RGB.

Advantages - very light, thin, use less power than CRT, less radiation

Disadvantages - not easy to repair, narrow viewing angle so image is not as clear from sides

What is a IPS Monitor? Name it’s advantages and disadvantages.

A

A IPS (in-plane switching) Monitor is an output device which uses LCD (liquid crystal display) to create image.

Advantages - wider viewing angle, much thinner, less glare, more energy efficient than CRT

Disadvantages - not as energy efficient as LED, not good for dimly lit rooms, bad shades of colour

A

A LED Monitor is an output device which uses light emitting diodes to form the image.

Advantages - thinner than CRT, much lighter than CRT, save more energy than CRT or LCD, better picture quality.

Disadvantages - more expensive, visibility is poor if sitting off-centre

Advantages - relatively smaller than laser, no ozone vapours, high quality print, quietness of operation, cheaper than laser printers

Disadvantages - high cost on ink cartridges, smudges, short-lasting cartridges, slow

A

A laser printer is an output device which uses a laser beam to print. Used in businesses.

Advantages - quiet, long lasting supplies, high printing speed, no smudge, reliable, cheaper to run, high quality printouts

Disadvantages - more expensive to buy, high power consumption, larger than inkjet

A

A dot matrix printer is an output device which are impact printers which work by hitting little pins against a inked ribbon to form text.

Advantages - cheaper to run than inkjet, can be used with continuous stationery

Disadvantages - noisy, low quality (dotty text), more expensive to buy than inkjet, not good for printing graphics

A

A multimedia projector is an output device which are used to project images on a computer to a much larger screen.

Advantages - many people can view the projected image, can show video to people sitting far away

Disadvantages - image quality is not as high as on the computer, image will be dim if room is not dark, user needs to know how to use equipment, cooling fans are distracting.

Advantages - can print on large than A4, do not need the services of professional print shops, fast

Disadvantages - expensive if only used occasionally, quite large for small offices

A

A 3D Printer is an output device which can produce 3D digital models offline by using a design software. Is used quite often in medicine

Advantages - can convert designs to prototypes faster than traditional manufacturing, cheaper to use 3D printing than traditional methods (despite printers being expensive), much easier to produce customised products

Disadvantages - limited number of materials can be used for 3d printer, dangerous items can be created, less skilled production

Advantages - help disabled people read the text
