What is hardwood?
Hardwoods come from deciduous trees, which have large flat leaves that fall in the autumn. Hardwoods take longer to grow, are not easily sourced and are expensive to buy.
What is softwood?
Softwoods come from coniferous trees. These often have pines or needles, and they stay evergreen all year round - they do not lose leaves in the autumn. They are faster growing than hardwoods, making them cheaper to buy, and are considered a sustainable material.

What is oaks properties and uses?
strong, durable, attractive grain
used for: high-end furniture, and whiskey barrels.
What is mahogany properties and uses?
has an attractive finish, quite easy to work with
used for: high-quality furniture, windows, and jewelry boxes
What is the properties and uses of Beech?
a tough wood, does not crack or splinter easily and is hard
used for: toys, cooking implements, and solid and laminated furniture.
What is Balsa?
lightweight easy to cut
used for: model making, and surfboards.
What is pine?
durable, easy to work with, reasonably strong
used for: house construction, floorboards, and furniture doors.
What is cedar?
natural oils make it resistant to water and fungal growth
used for: outdoor furniture, fences, sheds
What is plywood?
structurally strong, resistant to warping, cracking, and twisting
used for: building and furniture panels
What is MDF?
cheap as made from waste wood, smooth surface for painting, easy to machine
used for: flat-pack furniture, wall panels, and storage units.
