Different types of materials and their working properties. (metals) Flashcards
What are Ferrous metals?
Ferrous metals contain iron and are magnetic. They are prone to rust, except for stainless steel and wrought iron.
What are non-Ferous metals?
Non-ferrous metals do not contain iron and are not magnetic. They do not rust.
What types of metal are Mild steel, stainless steel, and cast iron?
ferrous metal
What types of metal are aluminum, copper, and brass?
non-ferrous metal
What does ductile mean?
A ductile metal can be bent or stretched easily.
What are the properties and common uses of Mild steel?
tough, ductile, malleable, high tensile strength, easily joined. poor corrosion resistants
used for:screws, nails, bolts, girders
What are the properties and common uses of Stainless steel?
corrosion resistant, hard, tough, sometimes magnetic, resists wear, difficult to cut
used for: kitchenware, sinks, cutlery, medical equipment
What are the properties and common uses of Cast iron?
Hard skin, brittle, softcore, good in compression, self-lubricating, magnetic
used for:Machine parts, vices, brake disc, manhole covers
What are the properties and common uses of aluminum?
corrosion resistant, malleable, ductile, easily machined, polishes well
used for: aircraft, foil, window frames, engine parts, drink cans
What are the properties and common uses of copper?
reddy brown/ corrosion resistant, malleable, ductile, tough, easily machined, good
used for: electrical wire, gas, and water pipes, printed circuits
What are the properties and common uses of brass?
yellow: corrosion resistant, easily machined, good heat/electrical conductor, good hot or cold working, polishes well.
used for: plumbing fittings, door fittings, locks, musical instruments
