What are the 8 dietary goals?
- Base your meals on starchy foods
- Eat lots of fruit and vegetables

Why should we eat more starchy foods?
They contain fibre (choose wholegrain) and can make you feel fuller for longer
How can we eat more starchy foods?
Eat foods such as:
Potatoes
Cereals
Pasta
Rice
Bread
What does a grain contain?
Outer husk
Endosperm
Germ
What is an unrefined grain?
Wholegrain / Wholemeal
Why should we eat lots of fruit and vegetables?
They have lots of ACE vitamins which are antioxidants and help prevent cancers and CHD
What is the red/purple pigment in fruit?
Anthocyanin
What are orange pigments in fruit called?
Carotenoids
What are green pigments called in fruit?
Chlorophyll
Why should we eat more fish?
It is a good source of protein and contains many vitamins and minerals
How much fish should we eat a week and why?
2 portions of fish a week - one portion being oily fish
Oily fish is high omega-3 fats which help prevent heart disease and helps communication in the brain
Why should we cut down on saturated fats?
They can increase the amount of cholesterol in the blood which clogs the arteries and increases risk of heart disease
Why should we eat less sugar?
Eating sugar increases our insulin levels and the more times we do this, it increases our chance of diabetes
