CHD & CVD Flashcards
What is coronary heart disease (CHD)?
Blockage or narrowing of heart arteries
What is cerebrovascular disease (CVD)?
Blockage or narrowing of brain arteries
What is a lipoprotein?
Layers of fat and protein - can contain cholesterol
What do free radicals do?
Oxidise layers off a lipoprotein which gets rids of the solubility of the lipoprotein, allowing it to get stuck in the arteries
Where do free radicals come from?
Alcohol
Smoking
Trans fatty acids
What do the protein layers of a lipoprotein do?
Makes it soluble
What does dietary fibre do?
Absorbs fat to be taken out the body
What can soluble fibre come from?
Oats and bananas
How can you get rid of free radicals?
ACE vitamins and phytochemical render them useless as they are ANTIOXIDANTS
What do ACE vitamins increase the amount of?
High density lipoproteins (HDL) - GOOD
Where do low density lipoproteins (LDL) come from?
Animals fats and plant fats - BAD
What does HDL do?
Removes cholesterol from the bloodstream and transports it to the liver for excretion
What does LDL do?
Opposite of HDL - carries cholesterol from liver to cells in the body
