Simple Carbohydrates
Quickest source of energy
Easily digested
Fruits, processed food and foods with refined sugar added
Complex carbohydrates
Nearly all plant based foods
Takes longer for the body to digest
Common in bread, pasta, rice + vegetables
Carbs knowledge extra
Very important for energy in the body
Mainly fuel high intensity, anaerobic exercise
Converted to glucose and stored in muscles and liver as glycogen.
Saturated fats
Found in sweet and savoury foods
Most come from animal sources
Too much = weight gain, loss of stamina, limits flexibility, health problems eg coronary heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure.
Cholesterol (fat)
Fat in the blood
Created by too much saturated fat
Made in the liver
Carried by blood as low-density lipoprotein and high lipoprotein
Too much LDL can lead to fatty deposits in arteries negatively effecting blood flow
HDL disposes of cholesterol
