diencephalon--intensive Flashcards
1
Q
diencephalon and 4 parts
A
- at physical center of the brain
- 4 components
- thalamus
- hypothalamus
- epithalamus
- subthalamus
2
Q
Thalamus
A
- part of diencephalon
- 80% of diencephalon
- fxn: main entry route of sensory data into cerebral cortices; regulates cortical activity by controlling which input should continue to cerebral cortex
- sensory shall/must pass through the thalamus
3
Q
hypothalamus
A
- part of diencephalon
- park of endocrine system–secretes hormones to trigger pituitary gland–ADH (antidiuretic hormone), oxytocin
- connect to limbic system via mammillary bodies–connect with hippocampus
- fxn: neurons form several vital functions critical to survival: regulation of autonomic nervous system, sleep/wake cycle, thirst and hunger, and body temperature
- without a hypothalamus, you are hypothermic, hypo-thirsty, and hypo-sleepy, *ANS
4
Q
epithalamus
A
- part of diencephalon
- fxn: connects to endocrine system via pineal gland; secretes melatonin–sleep wake cycle
5
Q
subthalamus
A
- part of diencephalon
- fxn: functionally connected to basal nuclei; help control movement
