Q

gray matter Cerebral cortex:

association area types (2)

A
  • unimodal: integrate one specific type of info

Q

Basal Nuclei

A
  • gray matter
  • clusters of neuron cell bodies found deep within each cerebral hemisphere
  • 3 parts:
    1. caudate nuclei
    2. putamen
    3. globus pallidus

-fxn: control of skeletal muscle movement

Q

cerebrum-white matter

A
  • myelinated axons
  • 3 types (also 3 different pathways for action potentials)
    1. commissural fibers: connect right and left hemispheres; corpus callosum is the largest
    2. projection fibers: connect cerebral cortex of one hemisphere with other areas of the same hemisphere, and other parts of brain and spinal cord.
    3. association fibers: restricted to one hemisphere, connect gray matter of cortical gyri w/ one another

Q

limbic system: structures

A
  • a functional brain system
  • 3 parts
    1. limbic lobe–structural, 2 main gyri: cingulate gyrus and parahippocampal gyrus
    2. hippocampus: involved in memory and learning
    3. amygdala: behavior, expression of emotion, especially fear
  • found only in mammalian brains
  • fxn: memory, learning, emotion, and behavior
  • only mammals can do the limbo (?)
  • when you behave well, you get to learn the limbo, memorize it, and feel good about it!
