What is a headword?
One of the words whose meaning is explained in a dictionary.
What is pronunciation?
The way in which a language or particular word is pronounced. How to say the word out loud.
What is a syllable?
A word or part of a word which contains a single vowel sound.
What is etymology?
The study of the origins, history and changing meanings of words. A description of the history of a word.
What is plural?
A form or a word that shows you are talking about more than one thing,person etc.
What does the abbreviation “C” stand for?
Century
Which part of the dictionary is also known as the entry word?
The headword.
Why is an example often included in a dictionary entry?
So you can understand the word better and it shows you what context the word is used in or which context/scenario a person might use it in.
Where is the most common definition of a word found?
In the first definition.
What do you notice about the headword?
It is always written in bold,in color and relevance to our society.
What do you notice about how the example sentence is written?
It is always quoted (inverted commas) and written in italics.
What do you notice about how the etymology is written?
In brackets (square brackets) and after the definition and example sentence.
How to pronounce the upside down “e” sound?
Like “uh or eh” but sounds like “ah”.
