Diathermy Flashcards
Diathermy Induction
greater magnetic that electric
pt. in magnetic field
greater flow in tissue with least resistance
eddy currents
tissue with high electrolytes= more inc in temp
Diathermy Capacitor
Stronger electric that magnetic
pt. area between two plates
center of e-field has highest current density
greater resistance by tissue=greater heat
Pad electrodes
need uniform contact
pad separation at least as wide as they are
several layers of towel
increase distance between pads=inc penetration depth
Drum
monoplanar coil inside housing
towel between drum and skin to prevent hotspot
best penetration if housing contacts towel
Air spaced plates
surrounded by glass/plastic guard
suited for area with lower fat
closer to skin=more heat
Cables
pancake coil >6cm diameter
1cm toweling between coil and skin
spacers used to keep 5-10 cm between turns
Indications for PSWD
Control pain and edema control pain would healing nerve healing (animal tested) bone healing (animal tested)
Contraindications for PSWD
mag/tumor pregnancy pacemaker contact lens/eye pt. who hemorrhage/active bleeding fever metal cardiac insufficiency growth plates acute injuries ischemic tissues
Thermal effects
vasodilation
inc metabolism
mm. relax
inc pain threshold through sedation of nerve
perspiration, inc ext, nerve growth
inc body temp, pulse
decreased blood pressure
Non thermal effects
repolarized damaged cells regularize cell growth re-establish Na pump microvascular perfusion inc cell function white blood cells to injured site alter membrane activity, ca binding and ion binding phs
How Diathermy functions
ion oscillation
dipole rotation
