How is Diastasis recti diagnosed?
Physical examination
Patient lives hook lying, lift their head and shoulders from supporting surface, palpable separation greater than two finger widths present
What movements should be avoided for patients with diastasis recti?
Abdominal crunches
Rotational exercises
Jackknife- supine directly to long sitting
Double leg lifts
What are potential negative consequences of diastasis recti
Altered alignment and mechanics of rectus abdominis
Trunk instability
Abdominal hernia
How is Diastasis recti managed?
Typically conservative
Physical therapy- gentle progression of corrective abdominal exercises
Abdominal binder- approximates healing abdominal muscles and lumbar support
Severe cases, surgical intervention to prevent complications with abdominal herniation
