Dialysis and kidney transplant Flashcards
What are the 2 types of dialysis?
Hemodialysis
Peritoneal dialysis
Hemodialysis
Patient’s blood enters the dialyser where it’s separated from the dialysate solution by a semipermeable membrane . Composition of the dialysate solution is predetermined in accordance with the patient’s needs . Excess waste products travel from the blood towards the dialysate compartment Cleaned blood travels back into the patient’s body . Used dialysate exits the dialyser, and fresh dialysate is pumped in
Peritoneal dialysis
a cleansing fluid flows through a tube (catheter) into part of your abdomen. The lining of your abdomen (peritoneum) acts as a filter and removes waste products from your blood. After a set period of time, the fluid with the filtered waste products flows out of your abdomen and is discarded.
Differences hemodialysis vs peritoneal dialysis
Factors to consider for a live kidney donor
Age
Comorbidities
Family history of kidney disease
Two healthy kidneys- Normal size (Ultrasound), normal function (GFR), no blood, protein in urine
Kidney match- blood type compatibility, HLA typing, serum crossmatch
Financial stability
Future pregnancy
Mental health history
What blood supply is new kidney plugged into?
the renal artery is anastomosed to the internal iliac artery as an end-to-end anastomosis or to the external iliac artery as an end-to-side anastomosis.
What happens to native kidneys after transplant?
