At what stage in kidney failure should dialysis be an option ?
A
- when GFR of 20 - 20% kidney function
- when symptoms of kidney failure become severe

What are some of the treatment option for kidney failure ?
A
- conservative - no interventions, just let kidney failure run its course + try preserve kidney function w meds and diet- ends in death
- kidney transplant : living/deceased donor
- dialysis

What is dialysis ?
A
When a function of the kidney is replaced using special equipment to filter/clean the blood

What are the 2 forms of dialysis ?
A
Hemodialysis (outside body)
Peritoneal dialysis (inside body)

How does hemodialysis work ?
A
-Blood is passed through artificial kidney (dialyser)
- 4hrs, 3x/wk
- done @ home occasionally
- mainly hv 2 go to clinic /hospital

How is the blood accessed in hemodialysis
A
- IV line inserted in neck
- fistula (connecting an artery and vein in arm)

How does peritoneal dialysis work?
A
- blood is cleaned through lining in abdo (peritoneum)
- tube inserted close 2 bellybutton into peritoneum
- dialysate solution poured into tube and left 4 few hrs
- solution diffuses waste product of blood
- waste fluid is then drained + discarded
- 20-30mins

What are the 2 types of peritoneal dialysis ?
A
- Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)
- automated peritoneal dialysis (APD)

A
- machine that is set up at night does the exchange while you’re sleeping
- can move as norm
