Diagnostic Testing Flashcards
What is an X-Ray?
invisible electromagnetic beams that produce images of internal tissues, bones, and organs onto film
What is an ultrasound?
High frequency sound waves that produce images of organs and structures within the body
What is a CT/CAT scan?
a combination of x-rays and computer tech to produce horizontal, or axial, images of the body (slices)
What is an MRI?
large magnets, radiofrequencies, and a computer that produce detailed images of organs
What is a mammography?
a special type of x-ray imaging used to create detailed images of the breast
What is an angiography?
special x-rays used for viewing blood vessels and organs by injecting contrast into the blood
What is a fluoroscopy?
a type of medical imaging that produces ‘live’ x-rays
What do nerve conduction velocity studies (NCS) measure?
time it takes for nerve to conduct and external signal
What does an electromyogram measure?
the electrical activity of a muscle or group or muscles
What is a lumbar puncture?
a test where a needle is placed in the lower back to measure pressure in spinal canal
What is an electroencephalogram for?
used to record electrical activity of the brain
What is an echocardiogram?
a cardiac echo, or ultrasound of the heart
What is an EKG for?
measures the electrical activity of the heart
What are the 2 types of stress tests and what are they for?
Exercise and nuclear stress test. They are to get the heart rate up to a certain level
What is a cardiac catheterization for?
it is used to evaluate coronary arteries
What is an endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography?
A procedure where a camera is used to evaluate the pancreas and gallbladder
What is a barium swallow?
a test that used barium contrast and x-rays to evaluate the upper GI structure. Barium contrast is swallowed.
What is a barium enema?
Similar to a barium swallow, but administered through an enema and used to evaluate the lower GI tract
What is an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD)/ upper endoscopy?
endoscopic evaluation of the esophagus, stomach, and part of the small intestine (duodenum)
What is a colonoscopy?
Endoscopic evaluation of the large intestine (colon)
What is a HIDA scan/ colescintigraphy?
imaging test that evaluates the gall bladder, liver, bile ducts, and small intestine
What is a carotid duplex?
An ultrasound of the carotid artery
What is an Ankle-Brachial test?
a test that evaluates the blood flow in the lower extremities
What is a magnetic resonance angiography (MRA)?
a type of MRI that is used to specifically look at blood vessels
What is a computer topography angiography (CTA)?
a type of CT scan that is used to specifically look at blood vessels.
What is a sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy?
a surgical prodedure used to determine whether cancer has spread beyond a primary tumor into your lymphatic system
What is a fine needle aspiration (FNA)?
A thin needle is inserted into an area of abnormal-appearing tissue or body fluid
What is a core needle biopsy?
a medical test to remove a piece of tissue from a lesion or mass
What is an open biopsy?
a surgical procedure in which an incision is made through the skin to expose the tumor and allow a sample of tissue to be cut or scraped away.
