diagnosing lameness in the horse Flashcards
what is the defintion of lameness
an alteration of the normal gait pattern casued by a fxn or structural disorder in the locomotor system
what are the 7steps to a lameness exam?
- hx 2. pe 3. palpation 4.observation 5. flexion tests 6. diagnostic nerve blocks 7. diagnostic imaging
what is the PRIMARY GOAL IN LAMENESS EXAM
LOCALIZATION N DIAGNOSIS
ANY HORSE YOU SEE FOR LAMNESS USE WHAT ON IT?
HOOF TESTER
when doing palpation always compare with what?
contralateral limb
what does down sound mean KNOW
for the front legs only! so when you have a lame leg in the front and you step on that lame leg your head goes back and your head goes down when you step on the normal leg.

what about when a hind limb is affected how does the horses head react?
so when steping on the back painful leg it will throw its head down to step more forward to get off that leg.

um ya
what is the answer?

2
what is grade 1 of lameness
its difficult to observe inconsistent at any gait
what is grade 2 for lameness
difficult to boserve in a straight line but consistently apparent under certain circumstances
what is grade 3 for lamness
consistently observable at trot under all circumstances
what is grade 4 for lamness
obvious lamness with marked head nod hitching shortned stride
grade 5 of lamness
in ability to move
what are 5 pathognomonic lamenss dx at the walk
- peroneus tertius rupture
- upward fixation of patella
- stringhalt
- fibrotic myopathy
- sweeney
what does a perooneus tertius rupture look like
its part of the stay appartus and the stifle and hock should be working together. but with a rupture the hock is extended and the stifle is flexed
what is striinghalt
over extension
what does upward fixation of the petella look like?
the horse steps but gets stuck then gets the patella thru. so hoof like sticks to the ground until patella get thru
fibrotic myopathy is seen in what muscles
the tendinous muscles
what is sweeny
nerve damage
what do you do after a lamness PE that is part of the test!!??KNOW
hoof tester
for a forelimb flexion test for the distal limb what is flexed?
fetlock, pastern, and coffin
hold for 30secs
for a forelimb flexion test for the proximal limb flexion what is flexed
carpus, elbow, and shoulder
hold for 30secs
for a hind limb flexion test for the distal limb what is flexed
coffin,pastern, and fetlock
for a hind limb flexion test for the proximal limb what is flexed
hip, stifle, and hock.
hold for 90sec
aka spavin test
not hock specific
what nerve do you block for abaxial nerve block
Palmar digital jsut more proximal aspect
