Glucagon GLU
INDICATED:
- Hypoglycaemia, (BM <4.0 ) especially known diabetics.
- Clinically suspected Hypo, where oral glu is not possible.
- Uncon pt, where hypo is a likely cause.
ACTION: A hormone that induces conversion of glycogen to glucose in the liver. raising blood glucose levels.
CONTRA: Low glycogen stores (recent use of GLU)
Hypoglycaemic seizures - IV GLU 10% is preferred.
CAUTIONS: Advoid IM administration, if likey to req Thrombolysis.
SIDE EFFECTS: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, hypokalaemia, hypotension.
Not to be given IV.
Glucose 40% Oral Gel GLG
INDICATED: Known or suspected hypo in a conscious pt, where no risk of choking or aspiration
ACTION: Rapid increase of blood glucose via buccal absorption
CONTRA: None
CAUTIONS: Altered consciouness
SIDE EFFECTS: None
Ad Info: Can be repeated.
Glucose 10% GLX
INDICATED:
- Hypoglycaemia, (BM <4.0 ) especially known diabetics.
- Clinically suspected Hypo, where oral glu is not possible.
- Uncon pt, where hypo is a likely cause.
ACTION: Reversal of hypoglycaemia
CAUTIONS: Only via large bore cannula.
