Diabetes Insipidus Flashcards
What is another name for ADH
Vasopressin
What is Diabetes Insipidus
excess dilute urine = extreme thirst
Not enough ADH releases
What happens when not enough water in body
- ADH released from pituitary gland
- tells kidney to retain more water
What are the 2 types of Diabetes Insipidus
- Pituitary (cranial)
- Nephrogenic (Partial)
What is Pituitary Diabetes Insipidus and treatment
lack of ADH production
TREATMENT:
- vasopressin
- Desmopressin
What is Nephrogenic Diabetes Insipidus and treatment
kidneys do not respond to ADH
TREATMENT:
- Thiazide diuretic
Desmopressin vs Vasopressin
Desmopressin…
- more potent
- longer duration of action
- not vasoconstrictor effect
Side effects of Desmopressin
- Hyponatreamia
- Nausea
How is hyponatraemia caused by Desmopressin
- too much water stored by body
- dilutes salt concentration on blood
- hyponatraemia
How to treat Hyponatraemia (non pharmacological)
fluid restriction
How to treat Hyponatraemia (pharmacological)
- Demeclocycline
(allows more water secretion) - Tolvaptan
(vasopressin antagonist)
Side effects of Tolvaptan
- osmotic demyelination
(serious neurological events)
How to prevent osmotic demyelination
do not rapidly correct of hyponatraemia
