What is diabeties?
Condition where the body pancreas does not produce enough insulin or body doesn’t effectively use the insulin produced
Types of diabetes?
Type 1: dependant on insulin. Patient cannot produce insulin (DKA)
Type 2: non-dependant on insulin (HHS)
What is insulin?
Hormone that increases transport of glucose across cell membranes released by the beta cells in the pancreas.
What is the normal readings for blood glucose?
4.0-7.0mmol
What is hypoglycaemia
Excess of insulin in the blood. Low blood glucose levels
Signs and symptoms of hypoglycaemia?
Sweating
Palpitations
Shaking
Hunger
Headache
Nausea
Speech problems
Aggressive behaviour
Confusion
Drowsiness
Management for hypoglycaemia
Conduct ABCDE
If patient is responsive administer glucogel/ 100ml cola/ 3 teaspoons of sugar
Administer glucose through IV/IM
Carry out blood glucose test
