Diabetes Flashcards
What other diagnosis is common with Diabetes?
Hypertension- thick endothelial lining leads to decreased blood flow.
To increase the flow, you have to increase the pressure.
What are some effects on the fetus from gestational diabetes?
Hypoglycemia, respiratory distress syndrome, asphyxia
True or False: Insulin can cross the placenta?
False: Insulin molecules are too big to cross the placenta. Glucose molecules can cross the placenta.
What kind of Acidosis is Diabetic Keto Acidosis?
Metabolic Acidosis
What is the compensation for DKA?
The lungs- breathing fast.
What are treatments for DKA?
IV fluids (3-4 Liters) and IV insulin
What are two things that you worry about with IV insulin?
Hypoglycemia and hypokalemia
How does Gestational Diabetes happen?
The demand for insulin production by the maternal pancreas increases 2-3 times more than normal- some people’s pancreas can handle it and some can’t.
What are some risk factors from Gestational Diabetes?
UTI, polyhydramnios (fetal polyuria), abruption (vascular damage), uterine atony (from large baby or poly), Pre-E (increased flow = increased pressure)
What are the three P’s of hyperglycemia?
Polyuria (losing volume), polydipsia, and polyphagia (the cells are starving, glucose are not in the cells).
When do you screen for Gestational Diabetes?
24-28 weeks
Are insulin needs increased or decreased in the 1st trimester?
Decreased: due to the small placenta
Are insulin needs increased or decreased in the 2nd/3rd trimester?
Increased: stress of labor and bigger placenta
How much insulin is required for control?
0.4-1 unit/kg/day
