Acid-Base Flashcards
Normoxia
Normal levels of oxygen
Hypoxia
inadequate cellular and tissue oxygenation
Hypoxemia
inadequate oxygen content in the blood
Hypercapnia
increase in carbon dioxide in blood
Acidemia
increase in hydrogen ion in the blood
Acidosis
increase in hydrogen ions in the tissues
Metabolic acidosis
low bicarbonate in the presence of normal pressure of carbon dioxide values
Respiratory acidosis
high carbon dioxide values with normal bicarbonate levels
Asphyxia
hypoxia with metabolic acidosis
Normal Ranges for Umbilical Cord values
pH: >7.10
Carbon Dioxide (PCO2): <60
Bicarbonate: >22
Base Deficit: <12 or >-12
Partial Pressure of Oxygen (PO2): >20
Normal Maternal ABG Values:
pH: 7.35-7.45
PCO2: 35-45
HCO3: 22-26
Which is the respiratory component in the maternal ABG’s?
PCO2- which is an acid
Which is the metabolic component in the maternal ABG’s?
HCO3- think kidneys this is a base
What are the abnormal values for each ABG value?
pH: <7.35: acidosis; >7.45: alkalosis
PCO2: <35: alkalosis; >45: acidosis
HCO3: <22: acidosis; >26: alkalosis
Metabolic Acidemia
This is a decrease in the pH/ depleted base in the blood
