Subjunctive mood

A

In both English and German, the indicative mood is used to talk about real conditions or factual situations. The subjunctive mood is used to talk about unreal, hypothetical, or unlikely events as well as to express wishes and polite requests. Present-time subjunctive can refer to the future as well as to the present.

The subjunctive form of verbs is the simple Past tense + subjunctive endings. In addition, strong verbs add an umlaut to a, o, and u. Note that the subjunctive endings are identical to the simple past tense endings of weak verbs minus the -t.
