carbohydrate, antihypoglycemic
Action of Dextrose
rapidly increases serum glucose levels, short-term osmotic diuresis
Indications for Dextrose
hypoglycemia, altered level of consciousness, coma of unknown origin, seizure of unknown origin, status epilepticus, Sickle Cell Crisis
Contraindications of Dextrose
Hypersensitivity to med, intracranial hemorrhage
Onset of Dextrose
less than 1 min

Side effects of Dextrose
extravasation causes tissue necrosis, warmth/burning to site
Adult dosage of Dextrose
12.5- 25g of 50% solution IVP (25-50mL D50)
Pediatric dosage of Dextrose for children >1 year old
0.5- 1 g/kg of 25% solution IVP (2-4 mL/kg D25)
Neonate/infant dosage of Dextrose
0.2- 0.4 g/kg of 10% solution IVP (2-4 mL D10)
Geriatric dosage of Dextrose
12.5- 25 grams of 50% solution IVP
OD management
Tx: symptomatically. Fluid bolus only in severe cases of hyperglycemia, not indicated after D50 administration)

Precautions/ special considerations
Preg category class: C
May aminister Thiamine prior to D50 in known alcoholic pts (not required) don’t aminister to known CVA unless hypoglycemia is documented.
